In their childhood young Polly and Joss lived next door to each other with their families. The two isolated adjoining cottages were just outside the busy town of Penryn in Cornwall, and although Joss was older their friendship became deep. However, Joss’s studies at Camborne School of Mines brought him into contact with the attractive Clementine due Cane, whom he subsequently married before leaving to make his fortune in America. 

Polly was heart-broken over Joss’s marriage, but grew to accept it and she married Edwin Pendleton, owner of a large granite quarry in Penryn. They are very happy together but fail to produce the baby which they so desire. 

Concluding that she will not become pregnant, Polly starts a dress shop with her friend, Lottie, who is Joss’s sister. This is a daring enterprise for two women during the early part of the twentieth century and it takes real determination for Polly to set up and run the business. 

. . . . But Joss’s return with wife and son, sparks a new forbidden flame in Polly and provokes one particular encounter which changes their fate forever. 

It is a story of love and passion tormented by restraint and faithfulness, set in a period when fidelity and honour were paramount.
